NYXNOOR JOURNAL · CUSTOM DESIGN
A useful custom ring brief does not need professional jewelry vocabulary. It needs clear priorities: what you love, what must fit your life, what can change, and what budget and timing the design must respect.
Preparing those details before you inquire reduces guesswork and helps a jeweler identify conflicts early—before one beautiful reference image quietly becomes five incompatible expectations.
Begin with purpose, budget, and priorities
State whether the ring is for an engagement, anniversary, wedding stack, daily statement, or another meaning. Explain how often it will be worn and whether it needs to sit beside an existing ring. Give a realistic budget range and name your top three priorities in order—for example: gemstone color, low profile, and asymmetrical side stones.
Also identify what is flexible. Perhaps you care deeply about the pear-shaped center but can change the exact side-stone arrangement. Perhaps the silhouette matters more than the gemstone size. A priority order gives the designer room to protect the concept when practical or budget constraints appear.
Describe the gemstone beyond its name
Include the gemstone type, natural or laboratory-grown preference where relevant, shape, approximate millimeter size, color range, transparency or inclusion preference, and any side stones you want. If pattern matters—as with moss agate or black rutilated quartz—describe density, direction, and contrast rather than requesting an exact duplicate of another natural stone.
Natural stones vary. A useful reference might say “airy moss pattern with visible clear space” or “dark rutile needles with a light gray body,” followed by the qualities that are acceptable to vary. Browse Choose Your Gemstone for NYXNOOR’s current categories, then ask about availability before ordering.
Choose karat, color, and finish separately
Write the gold purity and color as separate fields: for example, “14K yellow gold” or “18K white gold.” NYXNOOR currently describes solid 10K, 14K, and 18K options in yellow, white, and rose gold. Selected designs may also support polished or softly brushed surfaces. If you want black gold, ask whether the dark surface finish is available for the design and how it affects care and production time.
If you have a known metal sensitivity, mention it and request the specific alloy information. Do not rely on a color name or karat number as an allergy-free assurance.
Provide the right ring size information
State the sizing system, not only the number. NYXNOOR uses US sizes by default. If you converted from UK, EU, or HK sizing, say so. Identify the exact finger and hand, whether the measurement came from a professional gauge or an existing ring, and whether the design will be worn alone or in a stack.
Band width affects how a ring feels, and stacked rings can feel tighter than a single slim band. Use the NYXNOOR Ring Size Guide as a starting point, then confirm the planned width and fit before production. Do not assume every detailed or stone-set band can be resized in the same way later.
Define silhouette, profile, and setting
Describe the outline seen from above: centered or asymmetric, delicate or substantial, botanical or geometric, straight or curved band. Then describe the side profile: low and close to the finger, or elevated to allow another band to sit nearer. If stacking matters, include clear top and side photographs of the existing ring plus any measurements you have.
Name the setting feature you prefer—prongs, bezel, halo, cluster, or another style—but connect it to a reason. “I want more visible stone,” “I prefer protected edges,” and “I dislike snagging” are more useful than a term copied from a caption. Ask what is feasible for the chosen stone shape, size, and wear pattern.
Add surface details and engraving carefully
Specify polished, brushed, hammered, or another finish only if it is available for the design. Include which surfaces should receive the texture, because the top, sides, and inner band may be treated differently. For engraving, provide the exact characters, capitalization, punctuation, and preferred placement. Confirm character limits and legibility before treating the engraving as final.
Symbolic motifs need the same clarity. Attach one or two focused examples and explain the feature you want carried forward. A reference image is inspiration and communication—not permission to copy another maker’s design or a promise of an exact replica.
Include timing without turning it into a guarantee
If you have a proposal, wedding, birthday, or travel date, state the date and delivery country at the beginning of the inquiry. Ask for the current production and delivery estimate for that specific request before ordering. NYXNOOR’s storefront currently displays approximately 1–2 weeks for production and an estimated 3–6 weeks for overall delivery, but custom complexity, finish, destination, and carrier conditions can affect the schedule.
Do not plan around the final day of an estimate. Leave time for design clarification and delivery variability, and confirm whether a rush option is suitable for the exact piece.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a finished drawing before contacting a jeweler?
No. A priority list, a few focused references, and clear gemstone, metal, fit, budget, and timing information are enough to begin a useful conversation.
How many reference images should I send?
Choose a small set and label what you like in each image. Too many unranked references can hide the features that matter most.
Can a reference ring be copied exactly?
A reference should communicate preferences, not request an exact copy. Natural stones, proportions, construction needs, and design ownership can all require changes.
When should I mention my deadline?
At the start of the inquiry. Include the date and destination, then ask whether the proposed design and delivery method leave a realistic margin.
