GIA says ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually safe for untreated, heat-treated, and lattice-diffusion material, while fracture-filled, cavity-filled, or dyed sapphire should receive more cautious care. If treatment is unknown, choose the gentler method and ask a jeweler before machine cleaning.
